This is our seventh auction partnership with Mesilla Valley Estate Sales. Auction items are locally sourced through generous donations to the APA Second Chance Thrift Store and community support. Our thrift store is located at 2475 N. Main St. and is open Tues – Sat from 10 to 6; 575-888-4882. Please shop/donate with our store to further support our work.
APA’s mission is to offer lifesaving programs and services to rescue at-risk companion animals in Doña Ana County and support people and their pets live healthy and happy lives together. We envision a time when all companion animals in our community are treated with respect.
APA operates an adoption center at 537 N. Solano Dr. It is open Tues/Wed/Thurs/Sat from 11 to 3 or by appointment at 575-571-4654. We care for up to 80 cats/kittens and more than 15 dogs in-house on a continuous basis. We rescue most of our animals from the municipal shelter but also from community members in Doña Ana County. APA runs the Pet Food Bank Program in the same building. We have run this pilot program since 2009, and it helps more than 100 needy families per month with needed food and supplies while also educating recipients about responsible pet guardianship.
APA has also been in partnership with the Southern NM Correctional Facility since 2016 for the P.A.W.S. (Prisoners and Animals Working Together) prison dog training program. We send long-term shelter dogs to this program to ready them for adoption; they learn obedience and housetraining skills from seasoned prisoner handlers. As part of this program, APA also offers employment to some former prisoners upon release to work in the PAWS in-house team at the adoption center as caregivers and to keep up the dogs’ training skills. To date, APA has rescued more than 6300 animals! We appreciate the support of our entire community in continuing our work. Visit us to learn more at apalascruces.org.
