How to Remove Utensil Wear from China
(Like a Pro!)

Your auction finds deserve to shine—and a little polish from the right product can make all the difference. Those faint gray “scratches” you see on plates are usually metal transfer, not damage to the glaze. That means they can often be removed safely and quickly.
The trick: Use Bar Keeper’s Friend Powder —the powder, not the liquid or spray— with a soft, non-scratch sponge. Gentle pressure is all you need.
The Fast, Safe Method
- Pre-wash & dry: Clean the piece with mild dish soap and warm water; dry completely.
- Dampen & dust: Lightly moisten the marked area (or your sponge), then sprinkle a small amount of Bar Keeper’s Friend Powder.
- Light circles: Polish the marks using very light circular motions with a soft, non-scratch sponge or cloth.
- Rinse thoroughly: Rinse away all residue with warm water.
- Dry & admire: Pat dry with a microfiber towel to restore the shine.
Why it works: BKF Powder uses oxalic acid plus a mild abrasive to lift metal deposits without harming most glazed porcelain when used as directed.
Do / Don’t (Protect Your Pieces)
- Do spot-test on an inconspicuous area first.
- Do use soft, non-scratch pads only—no steel wool.
- Don’t clean gold or silver gilt, metallic decals, or hand-painted areas with BKF. Work only on the plain glazed field.
- Do hand-wash fine or decorated china to reduce future wear.
- Do place felt or paper towels between stacked plates.
When It’s Not Utensil Wear
- Tea/coffee staining: Try a gentle baking-soda paste; rinse well.
- Crazing (fine lines) & deep discoloration: That’s within the glaze and may need a professional; DIY scrubbing won’t fix it.
- Heavily decorated or matte surfaces: Skip powders; consult a restorer.
Safety & Vintage Caveats
- Rinse thoroughly after cleaning to remove all residue.
- Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin; avoid eye contact with cleaners.
TL;DR
- The gray lines are metal transfer—not permanent scratches.
- Use Bar Keeper’s Friend Powder + soft sponge, light circles, thorough rinse.
- Avoid gilded/painted areas, hand-wash fine pieces, and stack with protection.
