Hitchcock Stenciled Windsor Deacon's Bench — Harvest Fruit & Foliage Crest
A classic L. Hitchcock spindle-back deacon's bench in the firm's hallmark hunter-green ground with gilt stenciling, paired with a warm-toned solid maple plank seat. The wide crest rail carries a dense harvest border — grapes, leaves, and open blooms in bronze and gold — while stiles, seat front, and the lower stretcher repeat coordinated leaf and floral motifs. Baluster-turned front legs with gilt-banded ring turnings splay outward beneath the shaped seat, and thirteen slender turned spindles rise to the crest.
The underside of the seat rail is stenciled in gold "L. HITCHCOCK. HITCHCOCKS-VILLE. CONN. WARRANTED.", confirming production by the Hitchcock Chair Company of Riverton, Connecticut — the mark used on pieces made after the firm's 1946 revival of Lambert Hitchcock's early-19th-century designs. Benches of this form served entry halls, dining rooms, and church vestibules alike, and the two-tone painted-and-natural finish is among the most recognizable expressions of American country furniture.
CONDITION
Good overall and sturdy. Minor finish loss to the seat and wear chips to the paint on the legs consistent with use. Stenciling remains crisp and legible throughout.
