Description

Tramp Art Chip-Carved Wall Mirror, White-Painted Pyramidal Frame

Tramp art at this level of ambition is hard to find. The carver didn't just notch a flat frame — they built it up in stacked, stepped tiers, each layer chip-carved with tight pyramidal points that catch light differently at every hour of the day. Corner blocks resolve into concentric square medallions. Top and bottom rails carry elongated cartouches bordered by rows of crisp facets. The sides run continuous pyramidal columns, each point hand-cut. A coat of chalky white paint unifies the surface and makes the deep-relief geometry read as something closer to architectural ornament than folk woodwork.

The back tells the construction story clearly: salvaged plank, later corner reinforcements screwed in for stability, twisted-wire hanger rigged for either vertical or horizontal hang. This is the tradition at its most resolved — a pocketknife, scrap wood, and a carver with genuine spatial intelligence. On a white wall, it functions as sculpture. Over a console or dresser, it earns a second look from everyone in the room.

CONDITION

Good overall with honest age throughout. The white paint shows scattered stains, chips, and scratches; some carved points show old splits and finish loss into the recesses. Glass is serviceable with minor surface flecks. Rustic by design in its folk-made construction.
