Cast Metal & Iron Sighthound Ashtray Trio — Mart Creations Double-Head &

A grouping of three sculptural hound-form pieces cast in metal and iron. The largest is an oval ashtray with a full reclining sighthound — long-coated, likely a Borzoi or setter type — modeled atop the rim in unpainted silvered metal; a magnet does not stick, indicating a non-ferrous alloy. The second is a heavily painted black double-head ashtray marked Mart Creations in the tray floor, its twin greyhound or whippet heads rising over a round dished well. The smallest is a solid cast iron reclining hound in worn white paint over dark iron, with a felt-covered bottom.

Figural dog ashtrays and smoker's trays of this kind were popular novelty and desk accessories through the mid-20th century, cast in aluminum, spelter, and iron for parlor and study use. The Mart Creations mark identifies a recognized maker of cast metal giftware. The unmarked iron hound retains a paper label reading "East Middlebury, VT" along with lot tags on the underside.

CONDITION

Good overall with age-appropriate wear across all three. The black Mart Creations piece shows paint chipping and loss throughout, exposing lighter substrate at the heads, base, and tray. The iron hound has heavy paint loss over most of its surface, down to dark iron. The silvered reclining-hound tray shows light surface wear and casting texture. Dings and dents consistent with age are present.
