Luigi Mandruzzato Murano Sommerso Hexagonal Vase, Teal & Green
A tall hexagonal sommerso vase from Murano, hand-blown in the mid-to-late 20th century and attributed to Luigi Mandruzzato. The form nests a teal-to-green inner core inside a thick clear crystal casing, the internal color deepening from aqua at the neck to a saturated green pooling at the base. Flat-cut, polished facets and chamfered base corners give the piece its architectural presence, and at nearly four pounds it carries the heft of serious production rather than tourist-grade work. The pvase is engraved with a diamond-point signature reading "Mandruzzato," consistent with the workshop's known signing practice.
The faceted multi-layer sommerso technique was developed on Murano in the 1930s–50s and refined through the following decades, becoming a hallmark of Italian modernist decorative glass. Mandruzzato's geometric pieces are prized for exactly this effect: the thick clear layer acts as a lens, magnifying and intensifying the cased color within. A confirmed maker signature sets this example apart from the large volume of unsigned generic Murano sommerso on the market.
History
The Mandruzzato workshop operated on Murano from the mid-20th century onward, producing the layered, precisely cut geometric forms that became signature to the family name. Multiple family members worked in the atelier over the decades, and diamond-point engraved signatures on the polished base are typical of their output.
CONDITION
Good. Flea bites to one corner of the base. Minor surface scuffs and light wear to the clear crystal at the base consistent with age and handling; the cased color and optical clarity remain strong throughout.
