Folk Art Carved & Painted Peacock Figure, Yellow & Blue with Iron Nail Crest
A whimsical carved and painted wooden peacock, worked in flat planks and assembled into a strutting profile — long upraised neck, hooked beak with a red drop wattle, and a fanned tail rising behind the body. The maker used hand-forged iron nails driven into the crown as a spiky topknot, their rust and taper reading as feathers. The body carries a bold yellow ground with a cobalt-blue tail broken by cut slots, mounted on twin iron-rod legs set into a black-painted plank base.
The charm here is in the naïve construction: visible seams where separate boards meet, incised chevron detailing on the tail, and a raised carved circle on the flank. This is a self-taught folk piece built for silhouette and color rather than realism — the kind of decorative bird figure that reads across a room.
CONDITION
Good, Rustic by Design. Paint shows intentional distressing and wear across the yellow and blue surfaces, with a knot void in the neck and open seams between boards consistent with the folk construction. Stands solidly on its iron-rod legs and plank base.
