Folk Art Steel Armadillo Garden Sculpture, Painted & Rusted Finish
A whimsical armadillo built from steel, its segmented carapace assembled from riveted and welded plates that arch over the body in the animal's characteristic banded shell. Broad shovel-shaped ears and a long pointed snout give the head real personality, while thin rod legs terminate in splayed, hand-forged claw feet and a tapering coiled tail trails behind. The surface carries a mix of natural rust patina, bare galvanized zinc, and loose brushstrokes of pale yellow paint — a deliberately layered finish that plays reclaimed material against gestural color.
Handmade recycled-metal animals like this one have become a fixture of New Mexico gardens and courtyards, prized for the way they weather in place and read as sculpture rather than mass-produced ornament. The armadillo, an emblem of the borderland and Texas–New Mexico landscape, is among the most requested forms. Suited to a patio, entryway, or bed among succulents.
CONDITION
Good and structurally solid. Rust, surface oxidation, and paint loss throughout are part of the intended reclaimed-steel aesthetic — rustic by design. Legs support the piece securely and all riveted plates remain firmly attached.
