Louis XV Style Carved Fruitwood Fauteuil with Floral Tapestry Upholstery
A Louis XV-style fauteuil with a serpentine, molded fruitwood frame and hand-carved detailing throughout. The crest rail is centered with a carved shell-and-foliate cartouche; the arm supports and knees carry acanthus scrollwork, and the seat rides on cabriole legs ending in scrolled feet. The cartouche-shaped padded back and rounded seat are covered in an aged floral tapestry in muted rose, gold, sage, and cream — peonies, roses, grapes, and fruit clusters woven in the aubusson manner. Open padded arms with upholstered manchettes complete the form.
The fauteuil à la reine has been a fixture of French drawing rooms since the mid-18th century, and this later example keeps the vocabulary intact: the loose grace of the cabriole line, the shell crest, the restrained carving that reads as ornament without excess. Unmarked, it functions equally as an occasional armchair or an accent piece where its silhouette can carry a corner.
CONDITION
Good overall. The frame shows scratches throughout and chips, with rubbing and finish wear concentrated at the arm terminals, feet, and lower rails. The tapestry is intact with even fading and soft soil consistent with age and use; the piping shows wear at the seat edges.
