Description

Jacques Adnet Style Equestrian Strap-Work Iron & Walnut Cocktail Table

A square cocktail table in the equestrian strap-work idiom associated with Jacques Adnet and his work for Hermès, built around a dark patinated iron base worked to imitate saddle leather — full harness straps, functional-looking buckles, D-rings, and a central snaffle-bit ring motif carry through the entire structure rather than sitting as applied ornament. Splay-footed legs terminate in subtle scroll feet and tie together across an X-stretcher centered on a forged ring. The walnut frame is accented by a rope-twist border and cradles a removable beveled clear glass top, so the sculptural base reads clearly through the surface.

Adnet (1900–1984), tied to Hermès and the Compagnie des Arts Français, produced equestrian-motif furniture from the 1940s through the 1960s, and the vocabulary remains a mainstay of the ranch and hacienda luxury aesthetic — a look with deep native demand across New Mexico and the broader region. This example is in the manner of Jacques Adnet; no signature, stamp, or maker's mark is present. The 42" × 42" square format is larger than most comparable examples on the secondary market and gives the strap-and-buckle base room to command a room.

CONDITION

Good. The iron base is sturdy and structurally sound, with patina, minor surface loss, and a small verdigris trace on one leg consistent with age and the intended distressed finish. The beveled glass top shows a scattering of light surface scratches across the plane; the wood frame carries expected wear.
