Description

Victorian Spinet-Form Writing Desk, Burl Veneers, Fitted Interior

Close the lid and this desk gives nothing away — a clean, handsome rectangle of warm walnut tones on four boldly turned legs, burl-figured end drawers catching the light on either side, a carved acanthus-scroll apron running front and sides. Open it and the whole thing transforms. The hinged central lid folds back; the case front drops to reveal a pull-out writing surface, five cubbyholes ranged above it, and two small drawers tucked into the fitted gallery — everything a letter-writer needs, hidden inside a piece that reads as pure furniture until the moment it doesn't.

The form borrows its silhouette from the square piano, a borrowing that was very deliberate: the spinet desk was the parlor statement piece of the late Victorian interior, functional without looking like work. The serpentine-shaped ends with their deep burl-veneered drawer fronts play against the plainer central panel, giving the closed form visual tension that rewards a second look. The oak-planked back is secured with cut nails and screws — period construction in the secondary wood where no one was meant to see it. A stamped "14" marks the underside of the apron. Solids and veneers throughout; unmarked. Previously restored.

CONDITION

Good and sturdy overall. Finish shows fading, UV lightening, and wear/loss across the top and case surfaces, with scattered scratching to the top. A vertical drying crack runs through one turned leg — structurally sound. Interior drawers and pull-out writing surface operate; hinged lids function on their brass hardware.
