Royal Munich Hand-Painted Portrait Plate in Ornate Giltwood Frame, c. 1900
A hand-painted porcelain cabinet plate set into a deeply carved giltwood-and-plaster frame, the central reserve depicting a dark-haired woman in a white gown and red striped shawl against a graduated burgundy ground. The portrait is ringed with raised gilt beading and bordered by a deep green band hand-painted with full pink roses and intricate gilt scrollwork and snowflake medallions. The reverse carries the Royal Munich shield-and-lion backstamp in gold along with a painted pattern number 7262, dating the piece to the turn of the twentieth century.
Plates of this type — portrait centers framed by floral-and-gilt borders — were produced in volume across Bavaria and Bohemia for the export decorative market, then framed by retailers as ready-to-hang wall pieces. The combative gilt frame here, with its Rococo-revival acanthus corners, beaded coursing, and applied scroll cartouches, is original to the presentation.
CONDITION
Good overall. The frame shows age-appropriate wear with scuffing and chipping to the gilt surface, losses revealing the blue-grey gesso and bare plaster beneath at high points and corners, and a stress crack through the upper corner ornament. The porcelain plate presents clean with bright gilding and strong color; secured to the frame backing with wire and tape.
