Mary Lander 1968 Abstract Figurative Watercolor & Ink on Paper
Two loosely rendered forms turn toward one another across this watercolor and India ink composition, signed lower right Mary Lander and dated 68 (1968). Fluid washes of green, orange, and red-magenta pool and bleed across cream watercolor paper, while gestural ink line work — feathered, dry-brushed, confidently drawn — pulls the figures into dialogue. The abstract figurative handling and saturated palette are consistent with American Abstract Expressionist works on paper of the late 1960s.
The date places the sheet at the height of abstract expressionism's diffusion into regional art communities, including the active modernist circles around Santa Fe and Albuquerque. The combination of luminous color and assured draftsmanship reads as mature studio work rather than student exercise. Presented in an olive green mat and black wood frame behind glass.
CONDITION
Good. Toning to the sheet consistent with age and paper stock. The paper dust backing is torn, and the frame shows scuffing to the black finish. Image and signature remain legible and stable.
