José Cisneros "Texas Ranger, c. 1870" Signed Pen-and-Ink Print, El Paso
A pen-and-ink composition by El Paso borderland artist José Cisneros, depicting a mounted Texas Ranger circa 1870. The rider sits a trail-worn horse in profile, rifle scabbard, coiled rope, and canteen rigged at the saddle, with prickly pear and mesquite filling the foreground — Cisneros's signature dense cross-hatching building the forms entirely from line. Captioned in pencil at lower left "Texas Ranger - C. 1870" and stamped in the plate "J. Cisneros / El Paso."
Signed in ink lower right "José Cisneros." Cisneros (1910–2009) spent his career in El Paso documenting the riders, soldiers, and frontier figures of the Spanish and Mexican borderlands, work that earned him a National Humanities Medal in 2002. This sheet is double-matted and professionally framed behind glass.
CONDITION
Good. Toning to the sheet edges consistent with age. Presented under glass in a double mat and metal frame; framing not examined out of the frame.
