Carol "Bud" Lemons Organ Mountains Watercolor — Las Cruces Valley with Cumulus
An original watercolor with gouache highlights on paper by Las Cruces artist Carol "Bud" Lemons, depicting the Organ Mountains rising behind a cottonwood- and pecan-lined valley floor, with a water channel — the Rio Grande bosque corridor or an acequia — threading the sandy foreground. The jagged needle ridgeline is built up in layered violet and grey washes, while a towering cumulus formation fills the upper two-thirds of the sheet, its undersides caught in pink and ochre light. Foreground rock and grass carry confident gouache and white highlights, the mark of a working watercolorist applying paint with assurance. Signed lower right in red script "Lemons."
Lemons painted the Organs from deep familiarity with the local terrain — here from the west-facing valley looking east toward the needle ridgeline, with the orchard treeline at mid-ground. It is a recognized compositional motif in Las Cruces regional art, and the range itself remains among Southern New Mexico's most identifiable landmarks, designated Organ Mountains–Desert Peaks National Monument in 2014. The piece combines transparent washes with opaque gouache passages, a professional working method handled cleanly across a medium-to-large sheet.
CONDITION
Very Good. Some debris is present behind the glass. Colors remain fresh and the sheet presents well within the mat.
