Folk Art Farm Scene — Plowman, Houses & Livestock, Acrylic on Wood Panel
An original hand-painted folk art landscape on a wood panel, worked in acrylic over a green-and-earth-toned ground. The composition reads as a narrative scene: a curving brown lane bordered by a coral-red rail fence winds between a red gabled house with a black roof and a white clapboard house with red door and shutters. A figure in white drives a brown horse at the plow across furrowed fields to the left, while a man in a hat carries a satchel along the lane and a woman in a blue cloak holds a child at center. A grazing cow and two pigs round out the rural cast.
The painter leans into the directness of self-taught vision — flattened perspective, bold outlining of windows and figures, and heavy, gestural paint application that lets the wood grain read through thinner passages. The naïve handling of scale and the storytelling impulse place it comfortably within the American folk and outsider tradition. The piece comes from a lifetime collection of folk art assembled over decades; the reverse is bare wood with scattered paint flecks from the working process. Unsigned.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear. Scattered paint loss and abrasion across the surface, with thinning that exposes the wood grain in several passages; panel edges show chipping and minor losses. The white house at right shows the heaviest impasto and some texture irregularity.
