Description

Victorian Etched Glass 5-Bottle Cruet Castor Set, Swiveling Ebonized Stand

A Victorian-era condiment castor set, the five glass bottles held in a swiveling silverplate-and-ebonized stand topped with a pierced openwork handle bearing a foliate crest, beaded scrolls, and rosette mounts. The bottles are wheel-etched with grapevine, leaf, and starburst motifs over thumbprint-cut lower bodies. Two carry faceted spire-form glass stoppers, two retain their metal-collared shaker tops with finial caps, and the central sugar takes a hinged dome lid. The turned base rises on a pedestal foot and rotates to bring each bottle within reach.

Castor sets of this type held oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, and mustard at the center of the Victorian dinner table, the rotating stand a hallmark of the form. This set is unmarked. The pierced handle and matched etched glass make it a complete and presentable example of the genre. The stand retains its full patina and has been left uncleaned for the next owner to finish to taste.

CONDITION

Good. No damage to the glass. Visible patina across the metal surfaces throughout — left unpolished by choice; additional cleaning recommended. One sugar bottle is hazy with interior glass cloudiness.
