Hand-Painted Wolf Hide Drum with Beater — Maker Marked "5"
A round hand-painted hide drum stretched over a bentwood frame, the head laced and the back drawn into the lobed, scalloped pattern typical of a single-piece rawhide lacing. The face carries a finely rendered wolf head in earth-tone browns, ochres, and whites, ringed by a black geometric sawtooth border with dotted accents. A braided rawhide carry loop crowns the top edge.
The drum is maker marked "5", branded into the wood frame between the lacing on the reverse. It pairs with a padded beater built on a natural branch handle — bark left intact over the lower shaft, the head wrapped in dark cloth and bound with blue cord. The combination of painted hide work and traditional construction makes this a functional and display-ready piece.
CONDITION
Very Good. No remarkable damage; no tears or rips to the head or backing. Hide and lacing remain sound, with light surface toning consistent with age and handling.
