Mexican Folk Art Terracotta Fruit Vendor Figure, Hand-Painted
A large hollow terracotta figure of a seated market woman cradling an armful of fruit, hand-painted in the tradition of Mexican folk ceramics. She wears a deep blue-green rebozo and dress, her black braided hair gathered and tied with a matching band, her face rendered with closed eyes and a serene, contented expression. Cradled in her arms is an abundant harvest — a wedge of watermelon, a ripe banana, a split mango, a whole melon, a red-and-white mamey or sapote, and a segment of sugarcane. The work is cast from a mold, hollow-bodied, and finished throughout with painterly brushwork.
Figures of this type celebrate the vendedora — the fruit seller who anchors the Mexican mercado — and are prized for their generous scale and warm palette. The exposed terracotta of the face, hands, and feet plays against the matte blue of the garment, while the fruit carries the brightest color. A second, smaller face is modeled at the base beneath the arms, a decorative flourish typical of the folk sculptor's hand. The piece is unmarked.
CONDITION
Fair and structurally sound. Finish loss and paint chipping are present across the sculpture, most notably to the black hair at the crown and rear, with scattered flaking to the blue garment exposing the terracotta beneath. Wear is consistent with age and handling; no breaks or repairs noted.
