19th C. American Punched-Tin Pie Safe, Star-Pattern Panels, Painted Grey
A 19th-century American pie safe in old grey paint, built to keep baked goods and provisions cool and ventilated while screening out pests. Six pierced-tin panels face the twin doors, with additional punched panels set into both sides — each worked in a radiating star-and-circle pattern of fine pinpricks. The two black knobs serve as door pulls, and the form tapers to splayed feet. Construction is solid wood, unmarked, with mortise-and-tenon door frames.
The interior holds two fixed shelves over a plank floor, dividing the case into bays of roughly 10", 12", and 13" in height. Pierced-tin safes like this one were kitchen and pantry staples across rural America before mechanical refrigeration, the punched designs combining function with the maker's hand. This example shows previous restoration: the back panel has been replaced with plywood, and the original lock has been removed.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear. The painted surface is sturdy and stable; the top shows a stable crack at the left rear corner. The right door does not close flush. The lock has been removed and the back panel replaced. Previous restoration throughout.
