Description

Antique Painted Pine Tavern Side Table with Mortised Tapered Legs

A country-made painted pine side table built on honest mortise-and-tenon construction, with a two-board, 1"-thick plank top floating over a single drawer and four square tapered legs. The drawer front retains its original turned wood knob and is bordered by a hand-painted dark border framing a lighter center panel — a decorative scheme now worn to a soft, broken patina that lets the warm pine grain read through. Cut nails and pegged joinery are evident at the apron and leg junctions.

The form follows the long tradition of vernacular tavern and work tables, where utility drove proportion and a coat of paint did the finishing work. The top shows decades of use scratches and a deep, lustrous wear surface; the apron and legs carry the original green-toned ground paint, abraded along edges and high points. A piece with genuine age and the kind of surface that resists reproduction.

CONDITION

Good with age-appropriate wear throughout. The plank top shows heavy use scratching, edge chips, and old losses to one corner; the drawer-front paint is worn to bare wood across much of its surface, with the border largely intact. Original paint on legs and apron is abraded at edges; joinery remains sound and the drawer operates.
