Description

Sterling Souvenir Spoons, 83.6g — Duluth Aerial Bridge, Glasgow, Tokyo

A collection of nine sterling silver souvenir spoons spanning American, Canadian, British, and Japanese destinations, dating to the peak of the souvenir spoon craze of roughly 1895 through 1930. The group includes two Denver spoons (one with a script-engraved bowl and figural prospector handle, one with a gilt mining-scene bowl), a Duluth Aerial Bridge spoon depicting the original gondola-ferry configuration that places it before the 1929 lift-bridge conversion, a Lake Louise Canadian Rockies spoon, a Tokyo spoon, a Greenway School, Coleraine, Minn. piece, a Spearfish, S.D. spoon, a Glasgow spoon with enameled "LET GLASGOW FLOURISH" civic shield, and a long Lake Champlain sterling straw-stirrer with ball terminal.

Several pieces carry identifiable maker and assay marks. The Glasgow spoon bears full British hallmarks — C.R.&S, the Birmingham anchor, and a date letter H, making it the only formally hallmarked British piece in the group. The Art Nouveau floral-handle spoon is marked CB&H STERLING, the mark of with Codding Brothers & Heilborn of North Attleboro, Massachusetts. The enameled Canadian coat-of-arms spoon with colored maple-leaf surround is marked STERLING &MCo, and one spoon carries a heart-flanked STERLING mark. The remaining pieces are stamped STERLING. The Aerial Bridge and Coleraine subjects hold genuine regional interest for Minnesota and Iron Range collectors; the Tokyo spoon is an uncommon destination for American sterling souvenir work.

CONDITION

Good overall, with tarnish and surface toning throughout — we'll leave the polishing to you. Enamel on the Glasgow and Canadian shields is intact. Engraved and die-stamped bowls remain legible. Age-appropriate wear consistent with use and display across all nine pieces.
