Gorham Sterling Silver Oval Meat Platter, Gadroon & Floral Border, 1450g
A substantial Gorham sterling silver oval serving platter with a shaped rim framed by a continuous gadrooned border punctuated at the cardinal points with applied floral-and-foliate cartouches. The well is plain and polished, centered with an elaborate engraved script monogram. The reverse carries the Gorham maker's mark cluster — the lion passant (British-style purity reference adopted by Gorham circa 1868), the anchor (Gorham's house device, denoting Providence, Rhode Island), and the Gothic G (the maker's initial) — struck together in a horizontal row above the word STERLING.
The form is a classic Georgian-revival meat or roast platter — weighty enough for serious table service and finished cleanly on both faces. At 1,450 grams of sterling, the lot carries meaningful intrinsic silver content alongside its decorative border work. The surface shows the honest accumulation of decades of active use, left as found.
CONDITION
Good. The well shows extensive surface scratching and hairlines consistent with generations of serving use, with light tarnish to the reverse. The gadrooned border and applied floral cartouches remain crisp. The polishing is yours to do.
