Description

Michael Lax for Copco Danish Enameled Cast Iron Skillet & Saucepan Set with Lids, Flame Orange

Copco's flame orange enameled cast iron, designed by Michael Lax and cast in Denmark, represents one of the cleaner design achievements in mid-century cookware — the point where Scandinavian functionalism and American kitchen culture met on the stovetop. This two-piece grouping includes a covered saucepan with the line's signature turned teak handle and brushed aluminum hanging cap, and a large covered skillet with an integral cast handle and opposing tab. The saucepan interior is glazed in off-white with a molded pour spout; the skillet keeps its cooking surface in bare matte cast iron. Both lids share the low disc-and-button finial that is immediately recognizable to anyone who knows the line. The saucepan base carries the molded "COPCO — MICHAEL LAX DESIGN — DENMARK" roundel confirming attribution.

Lax, a New York-based industrial designer, developed the Copco range in the early 1960s after studying the Danish cast iron foundry tradition firsthand. His contribution was not the material — enameled cast iron had been a European kitchen staple for generations — but the visual language: sculptural, architecturally proportioned forms with warm-toned wood and saturated enamel glazes intended to travel from burner to table without a second thought. The flame orange colorway is the most collected of the run, and the teak-handled saucepan is the form most associated with Lax's specific design sensibility within the broader Copco catalog. Both lids are original to their pieces.

CONDITION

Good overall. The larger skillet's lid has enamel chipping to the top surface and inner rim, including one sizable chip exposing bare metal on the lid exterior near the rim. The skillet's bare cast iron cooking surface shows seasoning buildup and use staining consistent with regular stovetop use; the saucepan's enamel interior remains bright with only light wear. Orange enamel exteriors on both pans present well with minor scattered marks.
