L.N. Fowler Phrenology Head — Full Faculty Map
A porcelain phrenology bust after the classic L.N. Fowler design, the cranium divided into the mapped faculties of the Victorian pseudo-science — Benevolence, Causality, Ideality, Constructiveness, Amativeness, Conjugality, Secretiveness, and dozens more rendered in fine black transfer line across every surface of the skull. The face is left smooth and idealized in the neoclassical manner, the plinth framed with hand-applied cobalt blue trim. The pedestal carries all the expected inscriptions: "PHRENOLOGY BY L.N. FOWLER" to the front, "ENTERED AT STATIONERS HALL" to one side, Fowler's thirty-year research statement across the reverse, and — on the far side panel — the L.N. Fowler / Ludgate Circus / London address cartouche.
This is a modern reproduction by Authentic Models (Creswell, Oregon / Breukelen, The Netherlands), whose mermaid roundel maker's mark appears on the underside base. Authentic Models has been producing museum-grade decorative reproductions since the 1990s with operations spanning the US and Netherlands; their phrenology bust is one of the better-cast tributes to the period original, preserving the full faculty text and cranial mapping of the Fowler design. The original L.N. Fowler bust — Lorenzo Niles Fowler (1811–1896), the American phrenologist who relocated his practice to London's Ludgate Circus in 1863 — was first produced in ceramic in the 1860s and became one of the most recognizable objects of Victorian popular science. Fowler's London operation sold these busts as both teaching tools and commercial objects; examples were registered at Stationers' Hall as intellectual property, which is the origin of that inscription. The reproduction is hollow-cast and carries the weight and surface quality of the fired porcelain originals.
CONDITION
Excellent. No chips, cracks, or damage observed. Transfer lettering and faculty boundary lines are crisp throughout; cobalt blue trim is clean and evenly applied.
