Description

Anna Lee Fisher Signed "The Second Step" Space Colonies Cachet — LISDA '81

Anna Lee Fisher flew on STS-51-A in November 1984, becoming the first mother in space. She was the fourth American woman to reach orbit, a mission specialist trained as an emergency physician, and one of the astronaut class of 1978 — the TFNG, Thirty-Five New Guys — that included Sally Ride, Judy Resnik, and Kathy Sullivan. Her signature on a piece of space memorabilia carries the weight of that group: the cohort that transformed who got to go.

This Globe PNC commemorative cachet cover depicts an orbital space colony station above a planetary surface under the header "The Second Step / Space Colonies" — a vision of permanent human habitation in space that the early Shuttle era made feel imminent. The 18¢ "Probing the Planets" stamp (Saturn) is affixed upper right, and the pictorial cancel — LISDA '81, U.S. Space Achievement, Hempstead, N.Y., OCT 17 1981 — frames the cover in the optimism of the program's opening year. The reverse carries a "COLUMBIA / YOUNG • CRIPPEN" globe-and-shuttle backstamp honoring STS-1's crew. Fisher signed in bold black ink across the upper field, well-clear of the cancel and cachet art. A Henry Bessler quotation on the lower front panel makes the theme explicit: the Shuttle was mankind's second step, the first being life crawling from the ocean.

A Certificate of Authenticity from Mesilla Valley Estate Sales will be issued with this lot. The signature has been personally examined and confirmed by James of NM Estate Auctions.
