Description

Jay L. Tschudy "Starburst — Native Rug VI" Brass & Steel Wall Sculpture, 2011

A welded metal wall sculpture by Jay L. Tschudy, executed in hammered brass with applied steel and copper detailing. The composition translates a Plains-style parfleche or rug motif into metal: a central black diamond medallion incised with a compass star, eight beaded rays radiating outward, and four mirrored feather-like spreads bordering a deep oxidized-red field. The piece is shaped to mimic a draped hide, with rolled fringe along one long edge, riveted lacing slots, and a verdigris-green binding that frames the form. The torch-rippled welds and flame-bloomed patina across the brass ground are integral to the surface, not incidental.

Tschudy, born 1963 in Yucaipa, California, and a descendant of the Blackfoot people, works copper, brass, and steel as his primary mediums. This example is hand-signed and numbered 139/250 on the verso, carries the artist's biography label and "An Original Jay L. Tschudy Design" tag, and is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity titled "Starburst — Native Rug VI," dated 2011. Mounts horizontally for wall display.

Authenticity

Verso bears the artist's silver signature and edition number 139/250, the printed Tschudy biography label, "Made in U.S.A." sticker, and a stamped "An Original Jay L. Tschudy Design" tag. A signed Certificate of Authenticity guaranteed by the artist accompanies the lot, naming the work "Starburst — Native Rug VI" and dated 2011.

Inclusions
  • Welded brass and steel wall sculpture
  • Signed Certificate of Authenticity (2011)

CONDITION

Very Good. An excellent piece that displays well, with only minor scuffs to the brass surface. Flame patina, torch-rippled welds, and surface variation are intentional to the artist's technique. Rope hanging cord present at the lacing slots.
