Pair of Hand-Carved Hooded Monk Figures, Praying & Reading with Rosary & Bible
A matched pair of hand-carved wooden monk figures, each robed in a hooded cowl with a knotted rope belt and a black-beaded rosary descending from the waist. The faces, hands, beards, and open Bibles are painted in cream and ivory tones against the natural and stained wood, with dark detailing to the eyes. One figure stands upright in contemplation, hood deeply cowled; its companion bows slightly forward over the book. Both rise from carved, beveled rectangular plinths.
The pair reads as devotional folk carving — the elongated, columnar silhouette and minimal tooling place emphasis on posture and gesture rather than fine detail. The two are finished in contrasting tones, one warm and light, the other darkened, which gives them a complementary presence when displayed together.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear across both figures. One monk has chipping to the hood, gown, and to the painted Bible; the other shows cracked feet at the base. Minor paint loss and surface wear throughout, consistent with handling and age.
