Description

Harland Young Western Oil — Wells Fargo Overland Stage Pursuit, Framed Print

The six-horse hitch is already at a dead run. The driver has the reins in one hand and his whip cracking overhead; the shotgun rider braces beside him as a group of mounted pursuers closes hard from the right, their horses kicking dust into the flat desert air. The red coach — lettered "WELLS FARGO & CO OVERLAND STAGE" and "U.S. MAIL" — cuts left to right across an open alkali flat, the wheel spokes blurred with speed, while a horizon of hazy mesas and sandstone buttes recedes in warm atmospheric distance behind. It is the kind of image that makes the room feel bigger.

Harland Young is recognized as one of the premier Western artists working in the United States, known for his command of resonant color relationships and his ability to freeze motion without killing it — horses that look like they are still running when the room goes quiet. That reputation holds here: the rich darks of the horse team read against the warm ochre and rose of the background formations with genuine pictorial force. The piece is a reproduction executed on a rigid, hard-backed giclee-style relief board — a process in which ink is printed directly onto a textured composite panel engineered with molded impasto-like surface relief to simulate the dimensionality of brushwork. The raised texture catches raking light and gives the image a physical presence that flat paper reproductions cannot achieve. No glass. The image is set in a stained wood frame with a gold-tone inner liner. The print surface carries no visible signature, title plate, or maker's mark.

CONDITION

Good overall. The frame shows scratches and chips, with chipping documented in the supplemental reference image along the lower rail. The print surface presents without notable issue.
