Anna Chrasta "Gold Figures, Beach" — Oil on Canvas, Swanson Art Galleries, 1970s
An atmospheric coastal scene by Anna Chrasta (b. 1943, Northern California), the San Francisco Bay Area painter known for tonal seascapes and figural beach studies. Worked in oil on stretched canvas, the composition reduces the scene to a single luminous field of warm gold — sky, sand, and surf dissolving into one another — with two slender, elongated figures standing at the water's edge, their forms reflected in the wet sand below. Three gulls cross the upper sky in a handful of confident strokes. The break of the surf and the low cloud near the horizon carry visible impasto, the palette knife working against the otherwise smooth tonal ground. Signed lower right, Chrasta. Set in a slim wenge-toned wood frame with a gold inner liner.
The verso retains its original Swanson Art Galleries, Ltd. retail label — San Francisco and Sausalito locations — cataloged as "Gold Figures, Beach," stock no. 74432, medium listed as oil, size 8×16. Alongside it, an original printed artist biography card with Chrasta's photograph remains affixed to the stretcher.
History
Anna Chrasta earned her B.A. from Chico State University in 1964 and built a regional following through the 1970s, placing work with Swanson Art Galleries — one of the Bay Area's better-regarded mid-century commercial galleries, with spaces in San Francisco and Sausalito. Her approach was instinctive rather than academic: she believed the painter's eye mattered more than formal training, and her tonal coastal canvases reflect that conviction. The palette is reduced, the gesture loose, the figures barely resolved — essentials only, nothing decorative. She traveled widely through the U.S. and Nova Scotia, and the seascapes she produced in that period carry the feel of coastlines absorbed rather than studied. The Chrasta signature on the recto and the Swanson label on the verso together confirm this as a period original sold through primary retail.
