Description

Astronaut Don Williams Signed & Inscribed NASA Color Portrait — STS-51-D / Atlantis Commander

Official NASA color portrait of astronaut Donald E. Williams, boldly signed in black marker and inscribed "To: Steven Hoyt, Best Wishes! Don Williams." Williams is shown in the standard blue NASA flight jacket beside a Space Shuttle stack model, the American flag at his shoulder, the photo captioned Donald E. Williams in the lower margin. The signature is dark and unhesitating, laid across the open sky background where it reads clearly against the gradient.

Williams flew twice as a Shuttle pilot and commander — pilot on STS-51-D (Discovery, 1985) and commander of STS-34 (Atlantis, 1989), the mission that deployed the Galileo probe to Jupiter. A U.S. Naval Academy graduate and combat-experienced naval aviator, he logged nearly 288 hours in space across both flights. The reverse carries the standard NASA non-copyright release statement and the JSC litho code, the format issued by the agency for crew autograph requests during the Shuttle era.

Authenticity

A Certificate of Authenticity is issued by Mesilla Valley Estate Sales and accompanies this lot. The signature is guaranteed authentic.

CONDITION

Very Good. Clean, bright color with a strong, fully legible inscription and signature. A faint horizontal handling line crosses the image at center; corners and margins are sound with no tears.
