Description

J.T. McGraw "Old Farm" Original Watercolor — Autumn Farm Buildings, Signed

An original watercolor on paper by John (J.T.) McGraw of Colorado Springs, Colorado, depicting a cluster of weathered white-clapboard farm outbuildings settled into a hillside meadow. The composition runs wide and low — a deliberate panoramic format — with long sun-bleached metal roofs and rust-edged eaves catching the particular quality of autumn light that only arrives when the trees are already turning. A loose-shouldered spruce anchors the center background while a mix of deciduous hardwoods in gold, ochre, and muted red frame the scene on both sides. Signed J.T. McGraw lower right; the verso carries a hand-written notation of the artist's Colorado Springs address and the title "Old Farm."

McGraw handles the medium with assured economy. The foliage is built in wet-into-wet passages — color bleeding into color before the edges can harden — while the clapboard siding and roof seams are resolved with drier, more deliberate strokes that keep the architecture legible without stiffening the overall atmosphere. A rust-red lean-to wall at mid-composition delivers the one warm accent against the cool greens behind it, and the dry foreground meadow grass is worked in loose, gestural marks punctuated by characteristic ink spatter. The left-side outbuilding sits slightly separated from the main structure, giving the composition a natural rhythm rather than a frontal elevation. The piece arrives framed and double-matted behind glass: dark green inner mat, cream outer mat, set in an oak frame with a pronounced grain profile.

CONDITION

Very Good. No damage noted to the watercolor surface or paper. The frame and matting present cleanly with no breaks or staining observed.
