Ortega Mexican Marquetry Wood Inlay Panel, Aztec Tobacco Offering Scene
A finely cut marquetry panel by the Mexican artisan Ortega, signed lower right "Ortega Mex." The scene depicts two figures in plumed headdresses exchanging a tobacco leaf over a smoking brazier, the rising smoke resolving into a circular Mesoamerican deity glyph at the top. The composition is assembled from a range of natural wood veneers — pale maple and birch tones for skin and garments, walnut and darker hardwoods for the headdresses, glyph, and earthen ground — with pyrographic line detail defining faces, feathers, sandals, and the leaf's veining. No paint or stain is used; all tonal variation comes from the selection of veneer species and grain direction.
Mounted to a solid plank backing with a contrasting darker wood border, the panel reads as a single image from a viewing distance while rewarding close attention to the cutting and the way grain is oriented to suggest movement in the cloak and smoke. The subject draws on pre-Columbian iconography — a recurring theme in mid-century Mexican decorative marquetry, particularly from workshop traditions centered in Olinalá, Guerrero, and Uruapan, Michoacán, where skilled artisans produced pictorial wood inlay panels for both domestic and export markets from the 1940s onward.
CONDITION
Good. Surface scratches and scuffing throughout the glossy finish. Chips to the wood along the side edges. Some minor toning and small marks to the lighter background field. Inlay remains intact and securely seated.
