Hand-Built Oak Caddy with 14 Glass Storage Jars, Dated 1979
A folk-made wooden carrier holding fourteen lidded cylindrical glass jars, built from oak with a tall arched center handle and a continuous row of round cutouts along each long side wall — a design that lets the jars be identified at a glance and gripped at the base for easy removal. Brass-toned fasteners run the length of the seams; the construction is direct and sturdy, the work of a maker building a functional object for practical daily use. The underside carries stamped maker's inscriptions.
Each of the fourteen cylindrical glass jars carries a flat black screw lid. The form — long, low, handled, with windowed sides — reads most naturally as a tool or hardware caddy, though the jar format would serve equally well for spices, seeds, or small craft supplies. Whatever the original use, the piece functions as well today as it did the day it was finished.
CONDITION
Good overall. The wood shows handling marks, darkened staining to the rails, and honest wear consistent with decades of use. One glass jar has a small chip to the side, approximately 1/2" × 1". Lids are stiff and difficult to remove. Some jars retain old dry contents.
