Don Quixote & Sancho Panza Spanish Embossed Leather-Clad Decanter, Amber Glass
An amber glass decanter sheathed in tooled, full-grain leather worked in deep relief with scenes from Cervantes' Don Quixote. The four panels carry the principal figures in their archetypal poses: the gaunt, bearded knight-errant in bust portrait above his lettered name "DON QUIJO[TE]," the squat Sancho Panza with hat in hand against a windmill backdrop labeled "SANCHO," and a full-length armored figure with rondache shield and sword set against a distant village. Diamond-and-dot tooling fills the shoulders and neck, with a grape-cluster motif at the throat and a foliate-scroll pattern on the matching fitted cap.
Pieces of this type were produced in Spain through the mid-20th century as decorative table decanters, the leather hand-pressed over a molded form and toned to a rich russet brown. The fitted leather-clad cap seats over an amber glass collar, and the literary subject made these popular souvenirs and gift pieces across the Spanish and borderland markets.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear. One corner shows worn, lifted leather, and there is light surface loss and minor flaking at the body seams and shoulder. The relief detail remains crisp and the cap fits securely.
