Mike Phillips Carved Alabaster Vessel with Wenge Chevron Inlay Band
A turned and carved alabaster vessel by woodturner and stone artist Mike Phillips, with a wide ovoid body in soft terracotta-orange stone. The translucent alabaster carries natural mineral veining and cloudy striations throughout, giving the surface a warm, lit-from-within quality. The piece is signed on the underside, with maker's marks and a notation reading "Alabaster" present in the reference photos.
The defining feature is the dark wenge inlay band encircling the shoulder, set with a precise marquetry chevron pattern that alternates the wood's bold black-and-tan grain. A matching wenge ring caps the flared rim and rings the footed base, framing the stone body top and bottom. The combination of carved stone and segmented hardwood inlay reflects a studio practice that bridges lapidary and woodturning traditions.
CONDITION
Very Good with no damage. Natural mineral veining and translucency are inherent to the alabaster and are not flaws. Light surface striations consistent with the stone's character.
