Hand-Burned & Hand-Painted Russian Matryoshka Nesting Dolls, Set of 5
A five-piece set of Russian matryoshka nesting dolls finished in the woodburned pyrography style, where the lace shawls, floral aprons, and patterned hems are scorched into the bare wood rather than painted. Each doll wears a headscarf framing a hand-painted face, with red skirts and clusters of red berries and grapes worked into the burned detailing. The largest figure carries gilded accents at the crown of her scarf. The base of each doll is signed and dated in burned Cyrillic script — "Загорск 1994 5а" with the artist's signature (Zagorsk, 1994) — placing the set's origin in the historic Russian woodcraft center now known as Sergiev Posad.
Zagorsk was the heartland of Soviet-era matryoshka production, and the burned-line decoration seen here is characteristic of the workshops that distinguished hand-finished dolls from mass-painted tourist pieces. The set nests complete from the 5½" mother down to the 1½" baby, each turned from a single piece of wood.
CONDITION
Good with no damage. Surfaces are clean and the burned and painted detail is crisp throughout. All five pieces nest and separate as intended.
