Byron Lichtenberg Signed Card — STS-9 Spacelab 1 Payload Specialist Astronaut
Hand-signed index card from Byron K. Lichtenberg, one of the first two civilian Payload Specialists to fly aboard the Space Shuttle. Signed in pencil and annotated by Lichtenberg himself with his mission designation — STS-9, 45 — and his role, "Payload Specialist." A clean autograph of an astronaut whose flight redefined who got to go to space.
Lichtenberg flew aboard Columbia on STS-9 in November–December 1983, the maiden flight of the European-built Spacelab 1 laboratory module. As a research scientist rather than a career NASA astronaut, he helped open the door for non-pilot specialists to conduct experiments in orbit. The card shows faint ghosting of the signature transferring to the reverse side — offset transfer consistent with pencil-on-card contact over time.
Provenance
Acquired directly from the consignor who personally obtained the autograph. This lot is accompanied by a signed letter from the consignor attesting to the circumstances of acquisition, as well as a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Mesilla Valley Estate Sales.
CONDITION
Very Good. Clean, bright card stock with a crisp pencil signature and inscription. Faint pencil offset transfer visible on the reverse; no tears, stains, or creasing. Pencil signatures are subject to smudging with handling — store flat and protected.
