Description

Alan Shepard Signed 1962 Dartmouth Commencement Ticket with Freedom 7 Program

A remarkable pairing of two pieces tied to Alan B. Shepard, Jr., America's first man in space and Dartmouth College Class of 1944. The first item is a red Dartmouth College Commencement and Baccalaureate Exercises ticket dated Sunday, June 10, 1962, numbered No. 573, boldly signed on the reverse in black ink "A B Shepard Jr." The ticket admitted bearer to Baker Library Lawn for the 11:00 a.m. ceremony, with rain venues listed as Rollins Chapel or Webster Hall. Less than a year after his historic Mercury-Redstone 3 flight, Shepard returned to Hanover for commencement weekend — context that gives this signed ticket genuine moment-in-time weight.

Accompanying the ticket is the official souvenir booklet "The Space Flight of Astronaut Shepard and the Freedom Seven, May 5, 1961," a period publication documenting the suborbital flight that opened America's crewed space program. The cover features the iconic White House photograph of President Kennedy congratulating Shepard at the May 8, 1961 ceremony, with John Glenn visible at left. Interior pages include additional period press photographs of Shepard with his wife Louise at the White House. Also present from the same archive: a Dartmouth College Library mailing card addressed to Ed O'Neill.

Provenance

Consigned directly by Ed O'Neill, the named recipient on the accompanying Dartmouth College Library mailing card — placing this lot within the same archive that received institutional correspondence from Dartmouth during this period. A certificate of authenticity issued by Mesilla Valley Estate Sales, registered to the winning bidder, will accompany the lot.

Historical Context

Shepard's May 5, 1961 Freedom 7 flight lasted 15 minutes and 28 seconds and made him the first American in space, three weeks after Yuri Gagarin's orbital flight. He returned to Dartmouth — his alma mater, where he had completed Navy V-12 coursework — repeatedly through the 1960s. A signed 1962 commencement ticket places him at Hanover during the height of his post-flight public life, between Freedom 7 and his eventual command of Apollo 14 in 1971.

Authenticity

A certificate of authenticity issued by Mesilla Valley Estate Sales will be registered to the winning bidder and accompany the lot. Signature characteristics — the looped capitals, the trailing "Jr." flourish, and the heavy downstroke through the surname — are consistent with known Shepard exemplars from the early 1960s period.

CONDITION

Good overall. The red commencement ticket is on heavy card stock and shows adhesive residue at two corners from prior mounting, light edge wear, and a small dark stain at the lower right of the front face; the signature on the reverse is bold and unfaded. The Freedom Seven booklet shows toning to the cream covers, light handling wear at edges, and a vertical crease running through the interior photo pages. The Dartmouth Library mailing card is clean with light toning.
