Andrew Kean 1995 Signed Art Glass Paperweight with Bronze Platypus & Crayfish
A miniature wildlife tableau cast in bronze and suspended above a swirling pool of blue and clear art glass. A platypus leans over the curved edge of the dome, bronze body finished in a deep brown patina with polished gilt bill and feet, peering down at a tiny crayfish frozen mid-scuttle within the glass below. The artist has captured a specific Australian freshwater moment — the platypus is one of the few mammals to hunt yabbies and crayfish along creek bottoms — and rendered it in the language of fine sculptural paperweight.
The glass dome is signed A. Kean '95 to the underside, with controlled bubble inclusions and ribbons of cobalt threading through the clear matrix to suggest moving water. The bronze figures are mounted to and embedded within the glass, integrating the two media into a single composition. A substantial, hand-sized object with real heft for its compact footprint.
CONDITION
Good with no damage noted. Bronze figures retain crisp detail and original patina; glass dome is clean and free of chips or significant scratches.
