Description

Handleys Ltd. Edwardian Satinwood & Burr Walnut Mirror-Door Wardrobe, Southsea

English case furniture at this level of finish is exactly the kind of thing that gets quietly absorbed into a decorator's personal bedroom before it ever makes it to a client. Handleys Ltd. of Southsea operated as one of the South Coast's leading house-furnishing establishments through the Edwardian era, and this wardrobe is a fair measure of what they put their name on: pale satinwood case with deeply figured burr walnut panel insets, fine penwork chevron stringing throughout, a lozenge motif repeated in the burr-veneered frieze beneath the stepped cornice, and an arched mirror door flanked by tall matched-burr side panels. The original brass retailer's plaque is affixed to the rear — confirmed present, readable, and intact.

Open it up and the domestic quality holds. The single hanging compartment runs the full width, fitted with a row of eleven brass coat hooks along the upper rail and retaining its original marbled-paper floor liner. Below, a full-width drawer on brass teardrop pulls sits on shaped bracket feet. Both the door and the drawer carry original locks; keys are not present. The secondary timbers — pitch pine interior boards, solid construction throughout — are consistent with quality English workshop practice of the period. This is the piece that holds the wall in a proper dressing room or principal bedroom, and it arrives with its maker attribution intact rather than inferred.

CONDITION

Good overall with age-appropriate wear throughout. Scratches and scuffing present to the case exterior; the mirror door is slightly bowed. Mirror plate retains good clarity. Locks functional on both door and drawer; keys are not included.
