Val St. Lambert Belgian Crystal "Ice Block" Paperweight with Frosted Capricorn
A hand-finished lead crystal paperweight from Val Saint Lambert, the storied Belgian glasshouse founded in 1826 near Liège. The form takes the shape of a roughly hewn iceberg or quartz crystal — faceted, irregular, deliberately asymmetric — with the polished planes catching and refracting light from every angle. Centered on the front face, a frosted Capricorn in mid-leap is rendered in soft acid-etched relief, the horns swept back, the small forepaws tucked. The contrast between the brilliant polished crystal and the matte frosted figure is the design's quiet trick.
The underside carries the original gold foil "VAL ST. LAMBERT BELGIUM DÉPOSÉ" label, intact and legible. Val Saint Lambert held royal warrants from the Belgian crown and supplied crystal to courts across Europe; their figural paperweights from the mid-twentieth century are collected for the precision of the cutting and the weight — literal and visual — of the crystal itself. A satisfying object in the hand, and a sculptural one on a desk or shelf.
CONDITION
Very Good. No chips or cracks observed. Original gold foil maker's label remains intact on the underside. Light surface marks consistent with display.
