Description

San Pascual Bailón Carved Wood Santo — Mexican Folk Art

A hand-carved wood figure of San Pascual Bailón, the Franciscan patron of kitchens and cooks, shown in his characteristic apron cradling a cooking pot. He wears a dark habit beneath a cream apron, the surface hand-painted in a bright folk idiom: pink petal sprays, green foliate fans, yellow-and-blue rosettes, and dotted borders along the collar, apron, and hem. The hair is carved in close dark ridges front and back, and the underside carries a painted "HECHO EN MEXICO" mark. The floral palette and brushwork are consistent with the Tonalá/Jalisco folk-painting tradition.

The yellow olla is a separately carved element that seats into one hand and lifts free. The figure's other hand retains an open socket for a companion utensil — typically a spoon or ladle — which is absent.

CONDITION
Very Good for the figure itself, with bright, largely intact polychrome and crisp carving detail front and back. Note that the carved utensil for the proper-right hand is missing, leaving an empty socket, and the pot seats loosely. There is minor paint rubbing along the base edge and light surface soiling to the cream apron from handling.
