Mexican Folk Art Hand-Carved & Painted San Francisco de Asís Figure
Hand-carved and hand-painted wooden figure of San Francisco de Asís (Saint Francis of Assisi), depicted in the Franciscan's characteristic dark habit with a decorated cream-ground apron and floral polychrome ornament in pinks, yellows, greens, and oranges. The stylized facial carving — heavy brow, direct gaze, full lips set in quiet composure — is characteristic of mid-to-late 20th-century Mexican artesanía folk carving. Ribbed chisel work defines the hair; the reverse shows a painted apron tie at the small of the back and carved fabric folds falling to the base. The underside is inscribed "HECHO EN MEXICO."
The figure holds a small yellow chalice in his proper left hand — consistent with the Franciscan chalice attribute occasionally depicted in Mexican folk santo carving. A carved socket in the proper-right hand originally held a second object, now absent — likely a cross, lily, or small bird, all attributes commonly paired with San Francisco in this idiom. Pieces of this type were produced as devotional folk sculpture and household santos throughout central Mexico, sold through mercados and through the tourist trade alongside more traditional bulto carving traditions.
CONDITION
Good overall with bright polychrome paint and crisp carving detail intact across most surfaces. The object originally held in the proper-right hand is absent — the carved socket remains open. Light handling wear and minor paint rubs at high points consistent with age and use.
