Description

Daystrom 1975 Chrome & Tufted Vinyl Dinette — Table, Leaf & 4 Cantilever Chairs

Daystrom Furniture, Inc. was one of the dominant forces in American furniture from the postwar era through the late 1970s, operating out of South Boston, Virginia under the Daystrom and Chromcraft parent umbrella. Their chrome-and-vinyl dinette lines were the aspirational middle-class dining room of the Nixon and Ford years — sold through department stores, furniture chains, and catalogue showrooms across the country, and now actively collected by devotees of 1970s American design. This set is a complete, dated, and labeled example: a square white laminate-top extension table on four heavy polished tubular chrome columnar legs, paired with four cantilevered chrome sled-base side chairs in diamond-button tufted ivory vinyl. Manufacturer's date stamps on the table underside and each chair frame read OCT 21–22, 1975 — making this a precisely datable first-generation domestic piece, not a later reissue or retailer variant.

The table top opens at center to accept the included 17 1/4" leaf, stretching seating capacity from a four-top square to a comfortable six. Chrome disc rosettes at each corner anchor the top with purposeful industrial flair. Each chair retains its original sewn-in Daystrom compliance label — Part No. 470820, urethane foam fill, manufactured Sinai Road, South Boston, Va. — the kind of intact provenance documentation that collectors of postwar American furniture specifically seek. The chairs' cantilevered sled bases flex slightly under load, a deliberate ergonomic feature of the design. The high tufted back and bolstered seat edge give each chair the relaxed lounge quality that distinguishes Daystrom's 1970s dining lines from the stiffer production of the previous decade.

CONDITION

Very Good overall. Chair chrome is bright and the tufted vinyl is supple across all four seats; one chair has a very small tear to the upholstery and a second shows a small blue stain. The table top has one minor surface imperfection, and the leaf has a small chip to the edge. Original manufacturer labels and date stamps are intact on all pieces.
