Josef Steiner Dutch Floral Still Life, Oil on Canvas in Carved Giltwood Frame
A small-scale oil on canvas signed Steiner at lower right, painted in the manner of the 18th-century Dutch floral still-life tradition. A profuse arrangement of carnations, roses, tulips, and assorted blossoms tumbles from a terracotta urn set on a stone ledge, accompanied by clustered grapes, scattered nuts, a bird's nest, and the small darting figure of a lizard at right — a vanitas motif borrowed directly from the Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch tradition. A butterfly hovers near the upper right, and the deep ground throws the saturated reds and ivories of the bouquet into theatrical relief.
The painting is presented in a substantial wood and plaster gilt frame with a carved laurel-leaf outer band over a reeded cove, a beaded inner sight edge, and a warm gilt finish. The frame is considerably larger than the canvas itself, giving the small picture significant wall presence. No glazing.
CONDITION
Excellent. No damage noted to canvas or paint surface. Frame retains its gilt finish with only minor wear consistent with age.
