Lux Clock Mfg. Co. Figural Mountain Lion Electric Mantel Clock, Waterbury
An electric mantel clock by the Lux Clock Mfg. Co. of Waterbury, Connecticut, cast in the form of a recumbent mountain lion resting against a rocky outcrop, the circular dial set into the stone. The cast-metal case carries a warm bronze patina with darker high-relief detailing that emphasizes the modeling of the cat's coiled body, the musculature along the flank, and the alert turn of the head. The dial is paper with bold Arabic numerals, pierced steel hands, and a brass bezel; the maker's mark "LUX CLOCK MFG. CO., WATERBURY, CONN., U.S.A." is printed at the six-o'clock position.
Lux Clock was founded in 1914 by Paul Lux and built its reputation on inexpensive, sculptural novelty clocks through the 1920s and 1930s — animal forms, figural pendulettes, and decorative mantel pieces aimed at the American middle-class parlor. This figural mountain lion model, with its naturalistic modeling and electric movement, dates to the late 1920s through the 1930s when Lux had transitioned a portion of its production to electric synchronous movements. Felt-lined base. Original cloth-wrapped cord retained.
CONDITION
Good and fully operational. Tested and running. Patina shows the expected high-point rub and minor surface scuffs consistent with age; the dial paper shows light toning. Original cord is intact and wired with a two-prong plug — have an electrician evaluate before extended use.
