Hand-Painted Papier-Mâché Folk Art Hens "Gloria," "Carmela" & "Philippe," Set of 3
A trio of folk art hens crafted from papier-mâché over armature, each hand-painted with distinct plumage and mounted on a painted wood base. The set comprises three named birds: Gloria, a speckled white-and-black hen on a coral-red base; Carmela, a buttery yellow hen with a downturned, foraging posture on a green base; and Philippe, a glossy black hen on a coral-red base. Each name is hand-inscribed on the underside of its base.
The hens show real sculptural personality — textured surfaces simulating feathering, applied paper combs and wattles, bead eyes, and modeled yellow legs and feet anchored directly into the wood platforms. The construction and naming convention suggest a single maker's hand. The expressive modeling, individualized poses, and personal naming lift these above generic decorative production into the realm of artist-made folk sculpture.
CONDITION
Good overall with age-appropriate wear consistent with displayed folk art. All three show chipped paint and scuffing — most notably small white losses across Philippe's black body and minor flaking at the leg-to-base junctions. Paper combs and wattles remain intact. No structural damage; all three stand securely and display well.
