1983-S U.S. Mint Olympic Prestige Proof Set — Six Coins in Original Case
The 1983 United States Mint Prestige Proof Set, issued by the United States Mint to commemorate the XXIII Olympiad held in Los Angeles. The set contains six proof coins housed in the original burgundy hardcover presentation folio with embossed Olympic torch and rings on the inner sleeve.
Obverse devices, by denomination: Lincoln (cent), Jefferson (nickel), Roosevelt (dime), Washington (quarter), Kennedy (half dollar), and the Discus Thrower with the Los Angeles Olympic "Stars in Motion" logo and date "1983" on the commemorative silver dollar. Each circulating denomination shows the standard "S" mint mark of the San Francisco Mint, consistent with proof issues of this series. A clear "S" mint mark is visible on the Olympic silver dollar below the date.
Reverse devices: Lincoln Memorial, Monticello, Torch with Olive and Oak branches, Heraldic Eagle (quarter), Heraldic Eagle with shield (half dollar), and the stylized American Eagle head with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on the commemorative dollar designed by Elizabeth Jones.
The 1983-S Olympic silver dollar was the first U.S. commemorative coin struck since 1954 and inaugurated the modern commemorative coinage program. It is the centerpiece of the Prestige Set, which was offered as a premium-tier alternative to the standard 1983 proof set.
