Description

1972 Austria 25 Schilling Silver — Carl Michael Ziehrer Commemorative

1972 Republic of Austria 25 Schilling silver commemorative honoring the 50th anniversary of the death of Viennese composer Carl Michael Ziehrer (1843–1922), designed by Rudolf Wenisch and struck in .800 fine silver at the Austrian Mint, Vienna, which produced this issue without a mint mark.

The Austrian 25 Schilling silver commemorative series ran from 1955 to 1973 and honored figures and milestones of Austrian cultural and historical life. Ziehrer served as the last official k.u.k. Hofballmusikdirektor (Imperial Court Ball Music Director) of the Habsburg Empire, a post previously held by Johann Strauss II, and composed waltzes, marches, and operettas that remained central to Viennese popular music into the twentieth century.
